I-4 Corridor Study Begins

Community Open Houses and Workshops are now underway to evaluate the development potential along the I-4 corridor.

On February 28, 2008, the Board of County Commissioners directed that an evaluation of the development potential along the I-4 corridor be undertaken. The study team has preliminarily identified a 1-mile area north and south of the I-4 right-of-way.  The Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission and Planning and Growth Management (PGM) staffs are working together on the I-4 Corridor Study. Also participating are the City of Tampa, the City of Plant City, the City of Temple Terrace and various agencies that have expertise in areas, such as, transportation, development, and natural resource protection.

The first phase of the Corridor Study will include issue identification, land use analysis, environmental resource identification and infrastructure availability along the I-4 corridor, which extends approximately 26 miles between the City of Tampa and Polk County.

The first community open house to discuss the I-4 corridor opportunities and preferences was held on May 29, 2008.   Approximately 120 people I-4 Study Areaattended and provided comments.  A governmental advisor and business interest workshop will be held on July 10, 2008.  The Planning Commission and Planning and Growth Management staffs invite the public to provide input and become involved in the planning process.  Progress reports are provided to the Board of County Commissioners every other month in order that the Board is aware of the issues as the planning process proceeds.

The Core Study Team is currently in the process of completing research on existing conditions, including opportunities and constraints. Beginning in late summer, the team will move toward analysis of the opportunities and constraints.  This process is anticipated to be completed by the fall.  During that time, the community meetings and government/business advisor meetings will continue to solicit comment.  Up-to-date meeting information and dates will be posted on the web at www.hillsboroughcounty.org/pgm/economicstudy.
