This issue’s Planning Commission Snapshots focuses on the people in Hillsborough County. The County experienced a surge of population growth since the last Census in 2000. How has the population changed? How has housing grown to accommodate this influx of new residents? This issue examines those questions, so read on! (Click on charts to make them larger.)

The County’s population is estimated at over 1.2 million people as of April 1st 2007. That’s an increase of 21 percent since the year 2000. Presently the City of Tampa accounts for 28 percent of the population, the Cities of Plant City and Temple Terrace account for 5 percent and unincorporated county is home to the remaining 67 percent.

Hillsborough County’s rate of growth has been 2.7 percent per year whereas the State of Florida grew by only 2.3 percent. The latest projections predict the County’s population will increase another 29 percent by the year 2025, putting us over 1.5 million people.

The County’s racial composition is predominantly White (78 percent), Black (17 percent), and Asian (3 percent). Persons of Hispanic origin comprise over 22 percent of the County.

Over the next twenty years, the Asian race and Hispanic ethnicity categories are predicted to be the fastest growing. The County largely consists of persons age 15- 44 years (45 percent) but the fastest growing category are persons 45-64 years.

The live birth rate for the county rose slightly between 2005 and 2006. The rate increased from 14.7 to 15 per 1000 population. However the rates differ between races. The birth rate among white mothers was 14.2 whereas non-white races (Black, Asian, etc.) were 17.8. Mothers of Hispanic origin accounted for almost 33% of the county's total.

According to the American Community Survey (ACS) there were 455,000 households in Hillsborough County. Family households accounted for 65% of all households with the majority of non-family households occupied by singles living alone in 2006.
The ACS reported 506,000 housing units in the county of which 10% were vacant. Of these housing units, 63% were single-family units, 28% were multi-family and 9% were mobile homes. Owner-occupied units represented 66% of the total housing units in the County.
