Why is it important to extend sustainability concepts to the Comprehensive Plan?

Our region faces unique environmental, economic, and community concerns. Planning for the future embracing resource efficiency can differentiate our county, attract green businesses and jobs, and improve the value of our community.   An incentivized approach to encourage builders and developers to incorporate low impact development and conservation based features in land development and buildings is needed to encourage reduced environmental impact in our region.  

The goal of implementing sustainability in the Comprehensive Plans and the Land Development Codes is to ensure the County is not inadvertently creating any barriers to sustainable practices.  The Comprehensive Plans and the Land Development Codes have evolved over many years and as such, it is important to review them from a perspective of conservation, health, safety, and efficiency to  encourage growth that is conservation based and environmentally beneficial.
