Wimauma Village Plan

Wimauma Village Plan

Wimauma was the name chosen by Captain Davis in 1902 for the train depot between Turkey Creek and Bradenton. Davis used an anagram of his three daughters’ names: Willie, Maude and Mary.  Twenty-three years later, Wimauma was incorporated as the fourth city in Hillsborough County but sometime after the Great Depression it ceased operating as a municipality.  Today, Wimauma is an unincorporated community with a unique history and a character all its own.

Located in Southern Hillsborough County on State Road 674 one mile east of US Highway 301, Wimauma is a highly diverse community of over 4,000 people. Agriculture plays a major role in the life of Wimauma; home to one of Florida’s largest farm worker populations.

Wimauma’s planning efforts fall within the framework of the SouthShore Areawide Systems Plan, adopted by the BOCC on June 11, 2003. The Areawide Systems Plan calls for the development of six community plans within the SouthShore area. The Wimauma Plan was identified as one of those plans. The Plan is intended to implement the Areawide Systems Plan's concepts at the local level as well as to provide a detailed and specific vision and strategies for the Wimauma area. Through the continued active participation of residents with the support of county staff, the Wimauma Community Plan is being developed to reflect the community’s values, provide guidelines for local development and address quality of life issues pertinent to the future of the Wimauma area.

Project Information

On December 6, 2004, a well attended kickoff meeting launched the Wimauma Community Planning Process.  Many participants at the Kickoff volunteered to join a Working Committee to identify issues affecting the community and to develop goals, strategies and implementation methods.  These goals and strategies will be prioritized to develop and fine tune the Community Plan over the life of the process.

Working Committee meetings are held at the Wimauma Senior Center on a monthly basis.  The meetings are open to the public and anyone can participate.  Opportunities will be available throughout the planning process for the general public to review and comment on the work and products being developed by the Wimauma Working Committee.

Wimauma Community Planning process documents are available in English and Spanish.  Spanish translation at all Working Committee meetings is offered.
